Developing Strategies

A key Contango strength is our ability to assess your existing portfolio, financial planning programs and current situation to develop a total strategy that will address your needs today as well as your objectives for tomorrow.

That means that as we help you invest for the long term, we are also working to ensure that your near-term goals are addressed – whether the goal is to purchase a boat next year or to find a temporary home for cash you will soon wish to deploy elsewhere.

Concentrated Equity Positions
For example, whether by design or accident, your portfolio may be dominated by a single stock holding. Perhaps you inherited it from your great grandmother; it’s done well for you and your family and you’re reluctant to sell. Or perhaps the stock is “restricted” – you obtained it through your company and can sell it only under certain conditions. Whatever the case, you know you should diversify your holdings, but are not sure how.

After discussing your needs and concerns with you we can craft a strategy that will enable you to continue to own your stock while reducing the risk inherent in such a dominant holding. Such strategies may involve hedging – selling a basket of securities designed to mirror the performance of your stock – or use options to limit the risk that your stock position entails.

Accessing Cash without Undermining Your Investment Strategy
When you need funds quickly, whether to purchase an asset, to provide bridge financing or for some other purposes, an investment line of credit (ILOC) through one of our affiliate banks may be the right solution for you.

ILOCs tie a conventional revolving line of credit to a Contango Capital Advisors investment management account – providing you with liquidity while enabling you to keep your portfolio in place.

Investment lines of credit typically provide more rapid access and greater flexibility than conventional financing structures. However, ILOCs do not replace conventional long-term financing solutions. Instead, they are designed to meet immediate, and typically short-term, liquidity needs as they may arise.

Active Cash Management
You or your business may need to hold a significant amount of cash for a short period of time. The cash may be sales proceeds awaiting investment in longer-term portfolios or awaiting redeployment in new transactions.

Whether the timing and the precise amount of money required are well defined or tentative, you’ll want to earn an attractive return while protecting – and having access to – your principal.

Business Succession Strategies
Too often, a business owner turns to a wealth manager or a financial planner only after they’ve made their decision about when and how to sell their company.

Contango's Private Business Financial Strategies team believes sooner is better. We can help you determine:

  • When and if to sell
  • How to best structure and market your business for a sale
  • How to minimize tax consequences
  • How to handle transfer of control to a family member
  • The optimal form in which to take sale proceeds
  • How to best deploy those proceeds

These are only a few of the ways Contango can help you meet your specific needs. For information about how we might be able to help, please contact us.
